Coronation Street’s Chesney Brown is caught in a web of peril, and eagle-eyed fans reckon they’ve sussed out the secret enemy – shockingly, someone from his own turf.
The iconic character, portrayed by actor Sam Aston, has been through the wringer lately on the famed street. Grieving over his brother-in-law Paul Foreman’s (Peter Ash) untimely demise, Ches certainly hasn’t had it easy.
Juggling Daddy duties with five kids, Chesney has been burning the candle at both ends and recently snagged extra shifts at the kebab shop that’s just thrown open its doors once more. But this week saw a wicked twist in Ches’ tale.
Come Monday’s episode (November 25), there was quite the ruckus when Chesney duked it out for a parking spot at Freshco only to be one-upped by a white van. Fuming, he trapped the van with his car and trotted off on his shop.
Lo and behold, upon return, he found his motor wrecked and the mysterious van speeding away from the scene, reports Plymouth Live. Cut to the Cobbles, and the very same van was tearing down the road, causing near-misses galore including a graze on Chesney’s car and nearly hitting him
Later, as Chesney recounted the frightful events, and his lad Joseph overheard and got spooked that the “van man” has it in for Chesney. Trying to reassure young Joseph, Ches played down the fender-bender, promising he’s safe.
Yet, the viewers are buzzing with theories that this is the beginning of an electrifying new saga for our Ches. Corrie enthusiasts reckon they’ve cracked the case on who was behind the wheel of that van and it’s a soap icon!
On a Corrie fan page, one sleuth speculated: “I wonder who the driver of the van was?” In the comments, fans were buzzing with theories, and many are convinced it’s Chesney’s mum, Cilla Battersby-Brown (played by Wendi Peters), back from the past. One fan posted: “Bet it’s Cilla driving the van!”
Another excitedly responded: “I hope so, always wanted her back.” A third joined in: “His mum, Cilla.” Someone else pondered: “She could be out to get Chesney and blames him for Les’ death perhaps? ” And another fan couldn’t contain their excitement: “Yes! Bring her back.”
Cilla first strutted onto the cobbles in 2003 as Les Battersby’s other half, quickly becoming a firm favourite among viewers. She’s been at the centre of some classic Corrie capers, like when she and Les (Bruce Jones) came crashing down through the ceiling thanks to Schmeichel’s bath invasion.
The Street said a tearful farewell to Cilla in 2007, but Wendi Peters graced us with a cameo in 2008’s Coronation Street: Out Of Africa. Cilla popped back for a short visit in 2014, yet since then, the brash Weatherfield legend has been off the radar.
