Coronation Street fans beg ITV bosses to axe ‘awful’ storyline as Rowan stoops to sickening low
Fans lost patience with Rowan Cunliffe after the Institute leader played a sick trick on Toyah in Coronation Street. Viewers have pleaded with bosses to stop the storyline.
Rowan Cunliffe continues to control Leanne Battersby but Coronation Street viewers have had enough of his antics.
The mysterious character portrayed by Emrhys Cooper made his first appearance in the ITV soap in March, 2024, when he first bumped into Leanne (played by Jane Danson) at The Chariot Hotel.
Since then, Leanne has been abiding by the rules of his Institute, forking out huge sums of money to be a part of the “self-improvement” group but her sister Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor) and fiancé Nick Tilsley have both expressed their scepticism.
In recent scenes of the Manchester-based drama, Toyah took action to expose Rowan but the Institute retaliated by dragging her to court for defamation. Toyah was ready to face the music until a call from Weatherfield General Hospital let her know that Leanne had been in a motorbike accident, which was plausible considering Rowan owns a motorbike.

But once she arrived in hospital, Toyah was horrified to find out that Leanne had never been checked in and she attempted to reach out to her in vain. Meanwhile, Leanne was in court for Toyah’s hearing, with Rowan by her side.
Toyah eventually figured out someone had played a trick on her and her mind immediately darted to Rowan who had everything to gain from her absence in court.
The fan favourite eventually arrived in court to find out she had been served with an injunction according to which any mention of the Institute would earn her a stay behind bars. Things went from bad to worse for Toyah when she discovered she faced serious financial obligations as she planned to bury her stillborn daughter… and had to fork out thousands in legal fees.
Nick demanded Leanne spoke to Rowan to ease the pressure on Toyah but viewers at home demanded bosses cut the storyline short on X, otherwise known as Twitter.
“Get rid of Leanne and the Institute storyline. Awful!”, one viewer wrote while another commented, in reference to previous scenes where Leanne met an important and admired character within the Institute called Willow via video chat: “Creepy AI Willow. This story line needs to end soon. It’s ridiculous.”
