Coronation Street Joel dad star’s first ITV soap role – and it’s linked to Websters
Coronation Street is set to focus on Joel Deering and his dad, Gus, next week but soap watchers might be intrigued to hear that actor Chris Garner has appeared on the cobbles before
Coronation Street has revealed an explosive new murder twist for Joel Deering.
Spoilers for next week see a huge whodunnit for Joel, played by Calum Lill, after the evil solicitor vanished. At the start of the week, PC Craig Tinker, played by Colson Smith, and Kit Green, played by Jacob Roberts, study CCTV from a train station car park and see Joel and then his dad Gus, played by Chris Garner, around a locker. Later, Kit interviews Gus and demands some answers over his missing son’s whereabouts.
However, later in the week, things take an explosive turn when it’s revealed that Joel has been murdered from two blows to the head, inflicted by most likely a crowbar, as many of Weatherfield’s residents are treated like suspects.
Due to the explosive storyline, viewers have been seeing more of Gus, played by Chris Garner, but soap watchers may be surprised to hear that the actor has appeared on the cobbles before, as well as a rival ITV soap.
Viewers were first introduced to Gus earlier this year but actor Chris’ first time on the cobbles was way back when in 1999. The actor portrayed a character called Malcolm Fairhurst, who was linked to iconic characters Kevin and Sally Webster, played by Michael Le Vell and Sally Dynevor respectively.
Malcolm was a Court Welfare Officer who investigated the circumstances of Kevin and Sally when they both applied for custody of daughters Rosie and Sophie.
However, this isn’t Chris’ only soap role over the years as he appeared in Emmerdale back in 2010 as Don Holmes and again in 2019 as Noel. Other roles over the years include The Bill, where he played three different characters David Edmonds, P.C Harrison and Tom Baird.

Chris also portrayed the different characters Jason Shields, DS Merriman and Jim Tomlin in Casualty over the years. His other TV credits include The A Word, Doctors and The Royal – to name a few.
It comes as Weatherfield residents are questioned about their whereabouts and their last meetings with Joel in upcoming scenes – but who has something to hide? With it revealed to have been two blows to the head by a heavy weapon, the weapon is claimed to be a crowbar.
So when one resident happens to be spotted with this very item, could it prove they are guilty? Meanwhile, another resident is caught out when their car satnav suggests they were near Joel’s home around the time he was likely killed.
