Coronation Street boss confirms explosive Christmas love triangle as a big mistake is made
Hearts are on the line in Coronation Street this Christmas and just when it seemed like Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) had got ex Daisy Midgeley (Charlotte Jordan) out of his system, the messy love triangle will rear its head again.
Currently in a relationship with Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon), Daniel is struggling with how best to navigate things given Bethany remains understandably self conscious since her stoma operation.
Meanwhile, Daisy has also received the attentions of Ryan Connor (Ryan Prescott) and, more recently, Kit Green (Jacob Roberts), but is it ultimately Daniel who holds the candle to her heart?
There is definite unfinished business, Coronation Street boss Kate Brooks told Metro when we caught up with her for a festive chinwag.
‘It’s a brilliant love triangle that keeps on giving and we will certainly carry that through December and into the new year,’ the former Emmerdale chief told us.
‘Daniel is in love with two women, that’s what it boils down to, he loves Bethany but he also loves Daisy, and not many people can pull that off – but if anyone can, a Barlow can!
‘He is absolutely torn over what to do for the best, and it’s ultimately his head over his heart but sometimes when you make a little mistake, things can come back and bite you on the bum!’
Explaining why she feels the situation has legs, Kate continued: ‘For me, the rivalry between Daisy and Bethany is fantastic, it’s so fun to watch, and it feels nice and soapy which I think is what we want to do with that story.
‘Obviously, there are other issue-led stories around it, but for me that love triangle dynamic, is going to be super exciting as we wonder what the heck Daniel is going to do and how will he ever get out of those holes that he finds himself in constantly?
‘What I love about it as well is there are no good guys or bad guys in it, it’s just these three people have found themselves in this situation and they just want to find their own happiness, but obviously sometimes when you find the happiness, it comes at a cost.’
While the storyline will come to a head around Christmas with a game-changing development that will turn things on their head, it’s clearly set to be a long burner.
And highly unlikely, given it’s a soap, that anyone will emerge from it all unhurt!
Kate also delivered a number of other Christmas plotlines, including a chaotic final day for Gail Platt (Helen Worth) and the sealing of the deal for Carla Connor (Alison King) and Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers).
Meanwhile, Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) will take revenge on her sister Toyah (Georgia Taylor) and her ex Nick Tilsley (Ben Price), while David (Jack P Shepherd) and Shona (Julia Goulding) head for the rocks.
