This article contains spoilers for tonight’s Coronation Street, which has not yet aired on TV but is available to watch now on ITVX.
Coronation Street has confirmed who wielded the weapon in Joel Deering’s (Calum Lill) murder, and it is quite a shock.
The hunt is on for Joel’s killer after his body was pulled from a river earlier this week, and the pathologist confirmed that he had been murdered.
Despite having been taken off the case, DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) was desperate to know the latest details, and quizzed Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) for updates.
As Kit explained that they were looking for a crowbar as they believed this was the weapon used to kill Joel, the pair were interrupted by a curious Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan), who was also looking for the latest news.
However, Kit refused to give it to him, and Ronnie was forced to wait until much later for any inside information.
As Lisa went about her day, she was shocked to discover from Yasmeen Nazir (Shelley King) that Mason Radcliffe (Luca Toolan) had been in possession of a crowbar.
The detective sergeant was quick to pass on the intel to Kit, before warning daughter Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin) to stay away from Mason.
When Betsy deduced that he must be under investigation, she confronted him, alerting him to the fact that the police were onto him.
Terrified that he was set to be caught up in the break-ins his brothers were planning, he attempted to ditch the crowbar, but was caught in the act by Kit.
As he was questioned, Mason denied killing Joel, despite having no alibi and a motive.
Kit pointed out that he seemed close to Betsy, and could have killed Joel in defence of her, but Mason vehemently denied it. However, it soon became clear that he wasn’t telling the truth.
In a flashback, we learnt that Betsy had visited Mason on the night of Joel’s death, terrified that he was going to hurt her, and Mason had promised he wouldn’t let him.
Despite having a motive, there was no evidence on the crowbar to prove it had been used to attack Joel, so Kit let him walk free.
After his interrogation, Mason warned Betsy that they should steer clear of each other, explaining how he was now in the frame for Joel’s murder. Horrified, Betsy confronted Lisa about accusing Mason in front of Dee-Dee Bailey (Channique Sterling-Brown).
As Lisa rushed off to make amends with her daughter, Dee-Dee filled Ronnie in on the situation, explaining how the police were looking for a crowbar as the murder weapon.
In the second flashback of the episode, we saw Ronnie searching through tools at the builder’s yard, before pulling out a crowbar. Does this prove that he was the culprit?
