A very desperate Gemma Winter (Dolly-Rose Campbell) resorts to stealing from a shop in Coronation Street soon to try and help her young daughter.
When it comes to money, the Winter-Brown family always finds themselves struggling.
Alongside Chesney Brown’s (Sam Aston) eldest son Joseph (William Flanagan) and Gemma’s mum Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove), the family have squeezed themselves into a two-up two-down terraced property for years.
In the last year we’ve seen their situation gradually worsen, struggling to buy basic necessities such as food and clothes for the children.
That’s when Joseph’s domineering maternal grandmother Linda Hancock (Jacqueline Leonard) stepped in from Portugal – splashing the cash and insisting he was enrolled in posh private school Oakhill.
She even bought the Winter-Brown clan a huge (and we mean, gigantic) American style fridge-freezer that has been plonked in the corner of their living room.
Across this week we’ve seen Chesney plead with his landlord to fix the boiler after it broke and in upcoming episodes, having enough cash to afford important items continues to be a massive problem.
In a shoe shop, Gemma is sitting with young Carys, who is trying on some very posh looking brogues.
Gemma then discovers the shoes on Carys’ feet are not actually from the sale, and they don’t have any available at a discounted price.
The assistant confirms the shoes are £45 – massively out of Gemma’s budget.
She begins to take the shoes from Carys’ feet and tells her she’ll find some cheaper ones, but Gemma then spots a mother and her child looking at trainers and feels terrible at how unfair their situation is.
Leaving the shoes on Carys, Gemma puts her old ones in the box and walks out of the store.
Meanwhile, Joseph has told his posh school friend Olly that his dad runs a catering empire. He invites some of them round for tea and Chesney serves up his best kebabs for the delighted kids.
Unfortunately when the parents come to collect the boys one dad in particular recognises Gemma – and she’s soon arrested for stealing the shoes.
What Gemma is currently unaware of is that she has a brother in the local police.
Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) was recently revealed to be Bernie’s long lost son. Although Bernie has reconnected with him, Gemma is as yet unaware that she has a brother.
When she’s arrested, Bernie begs Kit to do whatever he can to get Gemma released. Kit goes to the shoe shop and speaks to the manager, explaining that he’d like him to drop the case against Gemma.
Gemma is, of course, puzzled as to why this police officer is willing to go to such lengths to help her and introduces Kit to Chesney and their children.
Is Kit’s relationship to the Winter family about to be revealed?
