Coronation Street Joel star teases soap future as secret wife and daughter revealed
EXCLUSIVE: Coronation Street hunk Calum Lill - who plays Joel Deering - has revealed his plans for his character's future with brunette beauty Dee-Dee Bailey and how he will win her over
Coronation Street hunk Calum Lill has revealed his hopes for Joel Deering and Dee-Dee Bailey’s future as the truth unravels about his second life.
Over the past few weeks, ITV fans have seen the brunette solicitor (played by Channique Sterling-Brown) fall head over heels for her colleague who first joined the street last year. The pair have quickly fell into a whirlwind relationship, with the legal advisor soon moving into the flat.
But things never stay golden for long on the ITV cobbles, as viewers found out last week when he was confronted by a mystery woman in the bistro. In upcoming scenes, viewers will discover more about his estranged wife Emily and their young daughter which he has been hiding from Dee-Dee.
Now, in an interview with Daily Star and other press, the 28-year-old star has revealed his hopes for the couple as the truth comes to light. Explaining the depths of his deceit, the actor revealed: “We find out that he’s actually got a wife and a daughter.
“He’s going through a divorce but legally, she’s not his ex-wife yet. So his soon-to-be ex-wife Emily turns up out of the blue and confronts him saying, ‘We need to do this now. I’m sick of waiting’.”
“I think hindsight is 20-20 I think he’s probably met this woman that he probably sees as a bit too good for him. She’s so intelligent and he sees her as so amazing, he probably puts her on a bit of pedestal and worries, ‘If I tell her too soon about my baggage, she won’t look twice at me.’
“So I think he’s probably waited for the right time and the right time’s not come and the longer he’s waited the more it feels like he’s deliberately deceived her. His intention is to be someone worthy of her, and I think he’s just dug a huge hole for himself.”
When asked if he will come clean to Dee-Dee and how he will make things up to her, he insisted that his character will do whatever it takes to make their relationship work. He gushed: “I hope so, for him.
“Because the thing I like about this is, he’s done the wrong thing, but he’s not meant to harm her. He’s just meant to have a good relationship her.
“He’s going to have to grovel and explain himself but it’s not black and white. It’s kind of grey in the middle and I hope what the audience enjoys from it is watching young people try and navigate quite a realistic relationship.
“It’s not Prince Charming and they’re not going to sail off into the sunset. He’s got baggage and he’s made mistakes and he’s human. He’s not perfect.”
The actor went on to share his dreams for his character to eventually tie the knot to the solicitor after making amends for hiding his life from her. He went on: “I think Dee-Dee is an incredible character and a very proud woman and a strong woman and I think he needs to do his grovelling.
“He absolutely needs to do his grovelling and he needs to make it up to her, but I want to see them both happy. And I think I’d love to see a Dee-Dee and Joel wedding.”
