Coronation Street star confirms exit after 16 years as he shares ‘thankful’ post
Coronation Street star Alex Bain has officially confirmed he will be departing the ITV soap after 16 years as the Simon Barlow star admits "I'm going to miss this"
Alex Bain is officially leaving Coronation Street.
Last year it was reported that Alex had quit the role of Simon Barlow after 16 years on the ITV soap. He was just seven-years-old when he landed the part and will bow out in an “explosive storyline” later in the year.
The actor, 22, confirmed the end is near for his character as he opened up in an emotional post. Alongside a snap taken in his dressing room, the star wrote: “Well my day is done!
“Nice and short day today! I’m gonna miss this little space some dearly when I go!” He added: “So glad I’ve got some shooting days left! So thankful!”
Alex’s departure will follow his on-screen father Chris Gascoyne’s, who recently left the show after 23 years of playing Peter Barlow. He made a heartbreaking exit from the Cobbles at the end of last year after killing Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce).
Simon has been struggling to cope with his father’s sudden departure and has been hitting the booze. It is likely that his recent downward spiral could be linked to his exit.
The dad-of-one opened up about what it was like working with Chris, 56, online. Replying to fans, he wrote: “@christgascoyneofficial is one of the most amazing and complete actors I’ve had the pleasure of working with on Corrie!
“He is one of the utterly incredible people I had the joy to learn and hone the craft of acting with, and I will always be grateful for all he has done.”
Following Peter’s emotional exit, Chris hinted whether his character could make a possible return in the future. At the end of a video taken on set, Chris said: “Will I be back?”
He teased: “Well who knows what we are doing tomorrow? I don’t know if he’s finished. Is he finished? We’ll see.”
