Coronation Street star making shock return to show – after TWO years off-screen
It seems show bosses are keen to shake up the storylines in the near future
ACTRESS Sarah Burrill will soon make a return to Coronation Street after a two-year absence.
The 55- year-old starred as a neonatal nurse at Weatherfield General between January 2019 and March 2022 and now she’s set to reprise her role once more.
Her agent Cartwright Higgins confirmed the news on social media, writing: “Big shout out to our actor Sarah Burrill who will be returning to the famous cobbles Sarah has been confirmed to return for two episodes.”
The actress has also starred on ITV’s Emmerdale and enjoyed various roles in theatre.
The news comes as fans of the show are said to be irritated by how the much loved and long standing character of Steven McDonald (Simon Gregson) has been turned into the village idiot.
Earlier this week a slew of fans took to social media site Reddit to criticize the sloppy storylines in which his character is always entangled.
They mentioned how Steve, who has been a firm fixture on the cobbles since 1989, is nowadays used as a lovable comedic character, had been “a bit of a villain, womaniser and dodgy guy”, but had since turned into a “buffoon guy.”
Other fans soon flocked to share their agreement.
One wrote: “This was all done by the actor, not bosses, bosses resisted his character change but relented in the end.
“I think bosses were correct and Steve should have stayed as he was.
“Steve could have turned into a Mike Baldwin sort of character, now his female equivalent on the show is probably Mary.”
Another remarked: “Used to be a great character, getting into all kinds of scrapes, dramatic and comedic.
“Like many of the characters, they can only really work with the c****y storylines and direction they’re given.”
A third shared: “Honestly it started about 20 years ago.”
During his time on the soap, Steve has married five women and later, at different points, remarried two of his ex-wives.
In 2003, he fathered Amy Barlow (Elle Mulvaney) following a one-night stand with her mother Tracy (Kate Ford).
Steve had been separated from his second wife Karen (Suranne Jones) when he slept with Tracy, although they later got back together for a time.
His most recent marriage was his second to Tracy herself, with the pair having tied the knot in 2018.
Although it was Steve’s longest marriage, he was left devastated earlier this year when Tracy left him for former footballer Tommy Orpington (Matt Milburn) following an affair.
However, spoilers for upcoming scenes suggest Steve will find a way to get his revenge – but what will it entail?
Coronation Street airs on ITV1 and is available on ITVX.
