Cassie Plummer (Claire Sweeney) is set to finally find a new job in Coronation Street, though it takes some twisting of the truth to earn the position.
After trying to come between Abi and Kevin Webster (Sally Carman and Michael Le Vell) and making cruel comments about Abi’s deepfake ordeal in recent scenes, Cassie lost her job at the garage, and has been under pressure from mum Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman) to find another.
‘[Cassie’s] in no man’s land really, her mother doesn’t really want her at the Dobbs’. That’s all a bit precarious at the moment,’ actress Claire Sweeney explained.
‘She lost her job and for someone with an addiction, a former addict having nothing to do is the worst place to be in, she can’t risk having time on her hands.
‘She tried to get the job on the switch at Streetcars and Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) just dismissed it. She is upset about that, as one minute he is flirting with her at the speed dating night and then he is saying she is trouble and can’t work on the switch.’
However, things start to look up for her when she overhears Steve, Amy Barlow (Elle Mulvaney) and Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) discussing care options for Ken (William Roache) following his fall, and spots an opportunity.
With qualified carers looking too expensive for the family to be able to afford, Cassie offers to do the job for a quarter of the fee a professional would charge.
Amy and Daniel think it’s a great idea, so Steve reluctantly agrees, before lying to Ken and informing him that Cassie is a professional that they hired through an agency.
‘She never claims to be a qualified carer but they don’t tell Ken that, they let him believe that she is,’ Claire revealed. ‘He thinks she has had all the checks and he believes she has told them that but the fact is they just let him believe that.’
However, when Cassie reveals that she isn’t qualified, and simply has experience caring for her ex and offered to step in to save the family some money, Ken is furious.
‘Ken obviously isn’t really liking the idea that he needs care’ Claire explained.
‘There is a lovely scene with him where she says, look, you know, sometimes you’ve got to allow yourself to be helped. People don’t want help sometimes, but it’s a kindness to let someone help you because it makes them feel good. And it works for you as well.
‘Also he has to think about his family too and this helps them. She tells him that she never claimed to be a qualified carer, she told Steve and Amy the truth that she cared for her ex. Once Ken realises this he is more open to the idea.’
Will Cassie be able to cling onto this job role longer than the last?
