Coronation Street’s Carla star Alison King burst into tears filming final soap scenes
Actress Alison King - who plays Carla Connor in Corrie - opened up about her final scenes with on-screen husband Peter Barlow, as actor Chris Gascoyne left the cast last year
Coronation Street’s Alison King confessed she was overwhelmed with emotion while filming the final scenes of her co-star Chris Gascoyne, who played her on-screen husband Peter Barlow. The actress, known for her role as Carla Connor in the ITV soap, and 56 year old Chris have been at the heart of some of the show’s most poignant moments, especially during Christmas 2023 when Peter made the heart-wrenching decision to bid farewell to Weatherfield.
The couple’s turbulent yet enduring love story has captivated viewers for over ten years, culminating in their second wedding in 2021. Despite their ups and downs, their bond remained unbreakable until it reached its conclusion last year, reports OK!.
Reflecting on the experience, 51 year old Alison shared, “We’re filming solidly together for two days,” adding, “There was a lot to learn. But aside from that, it was amazing, but it was so emotional, I did not need any tear stick for those scenes. There was no way of knowing what would happen because every time we did it I literally filled up with emotion and started crying at different times in every scene.”
She enthused: “Just seeing a different look from Chris would set me off because he’s so wonderful at the Meisner technique, which involves an actor reacting to another actor’s performance and behaviour, he’s so reactive. That’s why I’ve loved working with him so much, it’s always about the reaction. We can do things 1000 different ways in each take. And he’s so brilliant every single time, it was just a different journey, and you’re absolutely spent, and it’s such a roller coaster of emotions.”
Reflecting on Peter and Carla’s final moments together, Alison said they were “lovely”, pointing out: “Even though it doesn’t go into specific details of all their past, it shows what they’re like as a couple. It was really nice to have that much time on them because people seem to enjoy them just having a conversation. It was something to get our teeth into with all the emotions, and it was a real journey. It was really, really lovely to do those scenes.”, reports OK!.
As Carla copes with Peter’s departure from Weatherfield, she’s been diving into her job and lately, her romantic life has started to sizzle again. The Underworld has boss has become friendly with DS Lisa Swain, and although it appeared they were merely good friends initially, their increasingly intimate interactions have left viewers guessing if a love affair is brewing.
