Corrie fans buzzing as ‘classic character’ returns to ITV soap after lengthy absence

Corrie fans were over the moon as a ‘classic character’ made a comeback to the ITV soap.

Devotees will remember that Leanne Battersby (played by Jane Danson) has been through a dramatic few months. Earlier this year, the show introduced us to the mysterious “self-improvement group” The Institute, which dupes the vulnerable out of their cash.

Leanne crossed paths with cult boss Rowan Cunliffe (portrayed by Emrhys Cooper) – and it wasn’t long before the slick swindler had her wrapped around his finger, much to the dismay of her betrothed Nick (Ben Price) and Toyah (Georgia Taylor), who had been dealt the blow of a germ-cell ovarian cancer diagnosis.

With no one else to turn to, Nick and Toyah found solace in each other’s arms – and one thing led to another with the pair starting an affair. After a surprise smooch, the two ended up between the sheets.

But their secret tryst was busted by Rowan – who caught them in the act and snapped a pic for a spot of blackmail, reports the Liverpool Echo. What’s more, Amy Barlow (played by Elle Mulvaney) also got tangled up with The Institute. Rowan managed to scam her out of her hefty £40,000 inheritance.

But this week, Leanne discovered the sordid truth about Toyah and Nick’s fling. Corrie’s Leanne was left gobsmacked after uncovering the dark secrets of Rowan and The Institute. She searched his computer, deleting everything The Institute had on Amy.

She then realised the cult had a file for her – much to Leanne’s shock. However, things took a dramatic turn when she discovered a file for Nick and Toyah, where Leanne learned all about their affair.

In a whirlwind of fury, Leanne stormed into the Bistro to grill Nick, who confirmed his affair with Toyah, admitting he was in love with her. Leanne wasn’t having any of Rowan’s lies either, as she grilled him about why The Institute was snooping into her life. She was having none of it and made a vow to reclaim Amy’s cash.

The drama didn’t stop there, as Leanne and Toyah faced off in an epic street battle. Toyah tried to justify her actions, but Leanne delivered a stinging slap that had fans cheering from their sofas.

Social media was ablaze with Corrie watchers loving Leanne’s no-nonsense comeback. A fan raved on a Corrie Facebook group: “Tonight we see saw the old Leanne come back. The way she spoke to Rowan go on tell him!”

Another chimed in: “It was good to see the old Leanne back. But I don’t feel sorry for her, she put the institute before anything else and now paid the price.” And a third fan cheered: “Love this side of Leanne!”

Over on social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, reactions varied, with one user saying: “Great to see Leanne coming back to her senses.” A fifth viewer chimed in: “Looks like the old miserable version of Leanne is back.” Meanwhile a sixth posted: “Leanne is BACK. Thank god.”
