Coronation Street

Corrie viewers floored as icon returns after going ‘missing’ – but there’s bad news

A Corrie legend star made a surprise return after fans noticed she ‘disappeared’ from the soap recently.

Gail Platt (Helen Worth) has been a fixture on the show since 1974, becoming one of the soap’s most beloved characters. This year though, it was confirmed Helen was leaving the cobbles after five decades.

The actress had reportedly been filming her final storyline at the time – which was initially set to feature the return of Gail’s ex-husband Martin Platt (Sean Wilson). However, over the past few months, fans have noticed Gail’s absence from the ITV soap.

This week though, viewers were thrilled when Gail made an unexpected appearance in Wednesday’s episode (September 5), attending Max Turner’s (Paddy Bever) 18th birthday at The Bistro along with the rest of the Platts.

Fans took to social media to express their excitement over Gail’s return. One viewer exclaimed on X: “Gail! There she is!!” Another fan noted: “GAIL!!!! That’s her first appearance since March the 25th.”

A third wrote: “A sighting of the lesser spotted Gail. Happy days.” While another added: “GAIL APPEARANCE FINALLY.”, reports the Liverpool Echo. One more viewer shared on the social media platform: “Loved seeing Gail in last night’s episode treasuring every appearance now.” Another agreed: “Treasure any Audrey and Gail scenes from now til Xmas.”

Gail’s poignant return to our screens is sure to tug at heartstrings, as the beloved actress Helen bids a fond farewell to the soap later this year. When fans got wind of Helen’s Coronation Street departure back in June, it sparked an outpouring of sadness.

Speaking about her decision to quit, Helen said: “This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world.”

She went on to say: “I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers who were very kind and understanding.

“I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in and week out, and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors and a brilliant crew. The past 50 years have flown by and I don’t think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet.”
