Following some darker storylines in recent weeks, there’s a delightful bit of pre-Christmas silliness coming up in Coronation Street next month.
Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman) has not been seen on screen since October, but she’s set to cause chaos for Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) in the coming weeks.
It all starts when Roy Cropper (David Neilson) takes delivery of a parcel, which turns out to be Evelyn’s Christmas present.
Evelyn is delighted to find that Roy has gifted her a backgammon set and heads to the pub for a game.
After setting up her board, she is all ready to play when Steve accidentally spills his beer over it.
Evelyn is left fuming and plots revenge. She ends up retaliating by sending Steve a letter informing that she’s taking him to the small claims court.
How deliciously petty.
Steve seeks the advice of solicitor Alya Nazir (Sair Khan), showing her Evelyn’s letter demanding £325 in damages.
Alya advises him to pay it, and Steve reluctantly hands over the cash.
But after he does, Evelyn reveals the solicitor’s letter was a fake and she wrote it herself, leaving Alya amused.
Evelyn’s antics don’t end there, however, as later in the week, Alya invites her to a criminal law lecture, and it’s not long before she’s caught up in a commotion…
Actress Maureen Lipman recently confirmed she’d signed up to continue playing Evelyn for another year, after signing a new contract.
She will be taking another break from the cobbles, though, as she appears in panto.
