Corrie’s Sean Wilson’s heartbreak after splitting from girlfriend before soap axe

Sean has left the programme

Coronation Street actor Sean Wilson was dealt a major blow before he departed from the ITV soap.

The actor is reported to have ended things amicably with his ex-girlfriend Susie, with no hard feelings on either side after their breakup. The pair had been dating since 2016 before going their separate ways. A source previously claimed that the couple had split just months ago. The public news comes just weeks after it was announced that Sean’s return from Corrie had been spiked by bosses after he had been hurled into a meeting.

Sean was set to reprise his role as Martin Platt, and bosses are reportedly planning to replace him with a familiar face – actor John Thomson. Earlier this month, the star returned to the Coronation Street set to start filming for his comeback, but both his co-stars and fans were disappointed to find out that Sean had stepped away from production.

The reason for his departure had initially been kept secret, but ITV has now revealed the actor chose to leave his role for “personal reasons.” An ITV spokesperson said: “Sean Wilson has stepped down from filming for personal reasons.” Although it was previously hinted that he had been cut him from the show.

“Sean and Susie’s relationship ended some months ago. There was no bad blood and they had had a wonderful relationship during the many years they were together,” a source told The Sun. But speaking to the Mirror, a source close to Sean denied these claims and insisted that he and Susie split before the coronavirus pandemic

It was anticipated that Sean, 59, who played his beloved character on the TV show from 1985 to 2005, would return to his role to align with Helen Worth’s departure as his on-screen ex-wife, Gail. A source told The Sun: “Sean was loving his time on the show, and he was very popular on set. He had filmed scenes with loads of the cast, but then suddenly he was summoned to head office, and later it filtered out he wouldn’t be returning or his scenes airing, but no explanation offered.

“Clearly it’s a major blow for bosses who must now find a new magical and happy ending for Helen – but they are confident they’ll pull it out of the bag, and give viewers something wonderful.”

Thankfully, the actor has another career to fall back on following his axe from the show. As Sean Wilson’s future projects come into focus, hints suggest his next venture will be a documentary series on cheese. After founding the Saddleworth Cheese Company in 2012, Sean found a new passion and has now revealed his ambition to showcase it on screen.

Speaking to the Daily Star last year, the cheesemaker said: “I’ve got an idea for a documentary about my cheese business and I’ve got an idea for a series where I go to inner-city communities where people are struggling, and then get to know people. I’ve had conversations with a producer and Discovery Channel are looking at some proposals which I’ve put together. There are loads of ideas flying around.”

The Mirror has contacted Sean’s reps for comment.
