It was recently revealed on Coronation Street that Bernie Winter’s (Jane Hazlegrove) secret son – who was given the name Zodiac at birth – was actually police officer Kit Green (Jacob Roberts).
Kit was brought in by DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) to help in the investigation into the disappearance of Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton), but among his other duties he was soon arresting Bernie for being drunk and disorderly.
He’d previously come across Bernie because she was looking for people called Christopher Green – the name Zodiac had been given when he was adopted after she gave him away. Kit did some digging into Bernie’s background and past and soon realised she was actually his biological mother.
Currently his siblings Gemma (Dolly-Rose Campbell) and Paul (Peter Ash) don’t know Kit is their brother and he’s happy for things to stay that way. But that doesn’t mean that he can’t be useful to them, as Bernie soon finds out.
Gemma is shopping for some new shoes for her daughter Carys and is horrified to find they cost £45. There’s no way she can afford it – money is always tight in her family and she’s just had a £70 parking fine in the post. In desperation she grabs Carys’s hand and they leg it from the shop with the shoes while the assistant is busy.
Later Joseph (William Flanagan) has one of his school friends round for dinner and Gemma gets a massive shock when the boy’s dad comes to collect him and she realises it’s someone from the shop.
Bernie is shocked to see Gemma being brought to the police station after being arrested for stealing the shoes. She knows what it’ll do to the family if Gemma is convicted of the crime, and is desperate to do something. This is where having a policeman as a secret son comes in handy, and she begs Kit for his help.
We’ve already seen that Kit is someone who’s willing to bend the rules after he caught Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) trying to plant evidence in Nathan Curtis’ (Christopher Harper) van in the Lauren Bolton case. He agreed to turn a blind eye to that and one of Lauren’s hairs was later found in Nathan’s van, helping to strengthen the case against him.
So Kit agrees to help Bernie and calls at the shoe shop to try to find a way of getting the manager to drop the charges against Gemma. Of course Gemma is still unaware that Kit is her brother and she’s intrigued to know why he wold go to such lengths to help her.
She introduces him to Chesney (Sam Aston) and the kids, and Kit finds himself surrounded by his long-lost family. And then he gets a shocking call from his dad, Denny (Danny Cunningham).
We’ve met Denny before, of course, and he’s a villainous character who was previously abusive to Bernie. His last appearance in the Street caused chaos, with Denny even being prepared to sell Paul’s wheelchair for cash, so a call from him is not welcome news. What does he want? And how will this affect the rest of the family?
