Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby) has waved goodbye to the Coronation Street cobbles amid anxieties about her ‘dad’ Paul Foreman’s (Peter Ash) worsening motor neurone disease.
Having been given a lucrative opportunity to study in Boston, Summer spoke openly to adoptive father Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) about how she didn’t feel comfortable leaving her family behind amid Paul’s health battle.
Billy selfishly agreed that she should stay, even though she definitely deserves somewhat of a break.
Aside from this turmoil, she’s also been diagnosed with diabetes following an eating disorder, kidnapped by churchgoers after agreeing to be their surrogate and dealt with boyfriend Aaron Sandford (James Craven) sexually abusing her best friend Amy Barlow (Elle Mulvaney) in recent years.
Learning that she’d kept her offer a secret, Paul made her promise that she wouldn’t let his MND harbour her successful future.
Making the tough decision to leave, she booked the flights to America and the blended family gathered for a roast dinner to wish her well.
However, the meal was tainted by Paul’s embarrassment after having to purée his food following doctor’s advice.
In tonight’s (27th March) episode, Summer finished packing her bags before heading off to the airport.
Still concerned about missing out on the final months of her father figure’s life, he reassured her that he’d be okay in her absence.
‘You need to go and enjoy every minute of it. Don’t worry about us, me, this’, Paul asserted.
As everyone gathered outside of their Rosamund Street flat, emotions began to flow and Summer asked if she could take her dads with her.
Hugging Paul, he bluntly said he wouldn’t die without her: ‘In all seriousness, I’ve said that if things get bad..’ he began.
‘…then you tell me, and I’m coming straight back’ she assured.
Could this be the last time Summer sees Paul?
