Coronation Street finally learned who Betsy was on the ITV soap in a recent episode, and now actress Sydney Martin has revealed what's ahead for DS Swain's daughter
Coronation Street newcomer Sydney Martin has teased the drama ahead for her character Betsy, after a recent twist.
The teen debuted as Sabrina’s unnamed friend on the ITV soap recently, before Friday’s episode confirmed her true identity. Betsy was revealed to be the teen daughter of DS Lisa Swain.
Swain and Betsy were shown clashing, before her mum told her they needed to go home. With more to be shown about their fractured relationship, following a sad loss a few years earlier, it seems there’s drama ahead.
Speaking exclusively to The Mirror, Corrie newcomer Sydney hinted her character could face danger with plenty of drama on the way. She also revealed why she “cuts her character some slack” over her antics with mum Lisa, following their sad history.
On what’s to come, she told us: “We see her in the factory causing a bit of mischief. We get a real sense for her personality and then maybe she kind of meets people she shouldn’t meet, and others on the street. But we definitely will see her personality shine through.”

On the drama between Swain and Betsy, she went on: “Betsy lost her mum two and a half years ago on duty, so when it comes to the law, cos both her parents had the same job, she has disrespect for the job because she lost her mum that way. It’s also kind of like the law doesn’t apply to me because Mummy can get me out of here.
“It’s that [type] of thing, we go into it a little bit but Lisa went to work two weeks after she lost her partner, leaving her 13-year-old daughter to deal with her grief, so I do cut her a little bit of slack.”
On if Betsy is anything like her detective mum, she added: “Lisa is very intelligent because of her job and that’s definitely passed down, but maybe we will see it in different ways. She’s not probably got her head screwed on as much as her mum, but definitely the traits shine through into the character, whether Betsy likes to admit she’s like her mum or not.”
