Is Steve McDonald leaving Coronation Street? Simon Gregson’s future on ITV soap amid Tracy’s affair

Soap fans have grown concerned Steve McDonald could be leaving Coronation Street over Tracy Barlow’s affair.

Romance has been hotting up for Tracy (Kate Ford) and Tommy Orpington after the ex-Weatherfield footballer started working on the family home when Steve (Simon Gregson) slacked on the DIY. Bosses of the ITV soap have confirmed that Tracy and Tommy will end up embroiled in a steamy affair, but fans are concerned this could lead to an exit for much-loved character Steve.

Steve and Tracy have been together for years but their relationship has been struggling as of late, with Tracy clearly not feeling the spark between the pair like she used to. When Tommy arrives, Tracy is taken by him and soon an affair begins.

But where does this leave Tracy and Steve’s relationship – and could he be leaving the ITV soap? Bosses have so far given no indication that Steve will be splitting from Tracy or even leaving the Cobbles for good, but whatever happens, this affair and betrayal will no doubt change the course of the pair’s relationship for ever.

Matt Milburn – who plays Tommy – said of his return to the ITV soap and reprising his role: “I was absolutely thrilled and over the moon, because it’s something I’ve wanted for years. I’ve played Tommy intermittently since 2016 so to be told that I was going to be coming back and given something far more substantial, I was delighted. Tommy is the perfect character for me to play because I love football and he’s a famous northern footballer. It’s great to be back!”

Speaking about what attracts him to Tracy, he teased chaos ahead for Tracy and Steve as he said: “I think he likes her sparky nature, her quick retorts and her banter is very sharp. He likes being kept on his toes. She’s not an easy target in many ways. I just think that they seem to have this chemistry between them that none of them see coming.”
