Coronation Street legend Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) made a swift exit from Weatherfield in tonight’s (April 26) episode, but not before dropping a huge bombshell on boyfriend George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley).
Earlier this week, Eileen was horrified to hear from son Jason’s girlfriend, who revealed that he had fallen off his motorbike and broken his back.
With Jason having relocated to Thailand back in 2016, Eileen had a long journey ahead of her, but wasted no time in booking flights.
Unfortunately, Jason wasn’t the only son she had to worry about, as Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) was sitting on a ticking time bomb after discovering Archie Shuttleworth’s will.
Not wanting Todd to keep his discovery to himself, Eileen revealed all to George, who soon realised that sister Glenda Shuttleworth (Jodie Prenger) was entitled to half of the family business.
While Eileen felt bad about having to leave while George was in turmoil, he assured her that he would be fine, and hoped that she would be too.
When Todd asked her how long she’d be gone, she revealed that she hoped it wouldn’t be too long, given that she was only going over because Jason was in hospital.
In real life, Eileen’s absence has been written into the show to facilitate Sue Cleaver’s appearance as Mother Superior in the nationwide tour of Sister Act: The Musical, so we reckon she’ll be gone for a while during Jason’s recovery.
With Eileen gone, George had a lot to think about, and later tested the waters with Glenda by asking her what she would buy if she suddenly came into some money.
As Glenda revealed that she’d like to buy some more franchises of Little Big Shotz,George was left thoughtful.
