Actor David Neilson opened up about what he likes about the divisive storyline
ROY Cropper goes on hunger strike as he’s sent to prison for murder in Coronation Street.
The cafe owner has found himself in a nightmare situation having been arrested for the murder of missing teen, Lauren Bolton.
Coronation Street fans have been left outraged by the storyline but things remain bleak for Roy.
In upcoming scenes, as they take their seats in the police interview room, Roy asks Dee-Dee for a piece of paper and an envelope and begins to write.
In the court, the CPS barrister paints Roy as a murderer with a violent past and lists his crimes including the assault on Gary and the abduction of Wayne.
As Nina, Evelyn and Carla await Roy’s bail hearing, Dee-Dee hurries over and hands Nina a letter from Roy.
Fighting back tears, they realise that Roy’s convinced he’s going to prison.
Unable to face the hearing, Evelyn heads back to the cafe to check on Freddie.
Dee-Dee puts forward her case and urges the Judge to grant Roy bail, but the judge refuses the application and orders that he be held in custody until his trial.
Later, Roy is seen in prison and refuses his breakfast or to leave his cell.
Has Roy given up on proving his innocence one and for all?
David Neilson – who plays Roy – said of the storyline: “Roy is innocent in every respect, he is innocent of the crime, but he is also an innocent soul.
“He never thought for one minute it would come to this, he truly felt that if he simply answered everything honestly it would all be okay and he was naive to assume that being innocent meant that he would be seen to be innocent.”
He continued: “What I like about this storyline is the way it has gone back 29 years to 1995 when Roy first arrived.
“It is reminiscent of that early Roy Cropper when people were suspicious of his behaviour and thought he was creepy.
“And all this history will be used against him, things that have happened in the past like abducting their foster child.
“All that makes this storyline interesting to play and to watch it unfold.”
