Sean Wilson's very unexpected next move after Coronation Street exit revealed

Sean Wilson has shocked Coronation Street fans after ditching his reprisal of Martin Platt on the ITV soap, with his next move looking very different.

The actor, 59, played Martin Platt on the soap from 1985 to 2005, returning in 2018 briefly, before leaving for good. He was set to return to the cobbles for his ex-wife Gail Platt’s exit storyline, only to leave fans gutted when he sensationally dropped the soap after filming began.

But it seems clues have already been dropped as to what he will be doing next, with Sean hoping to front a documentary series on cheese. Having started the Saddleworth Cheese Company in 2012, Sean realised his true “passion” and recently revealed he wants to take it to the small screen.

Speaking to the Daily Star last year, the cheesemaker said: “I’ve got an idea for a documentary about my cheese business and I’ve got an idea for a series where I go to inner-city communities where people are struggling, and then get to know people. I’ve had conversations with a producer and Discovery Channel are looking at some proposals which I’ve put together. There are loads of ideas flying around.”

He previously delved into his love for cheese on Graham Norton’s radio show, saying: “Cheese is my passion, and I make Lancashire cheeses, so they’re very much under the banner of territorial cheeses, which then takes you to the history of British cheese. We have Lancashire, Cheshire, Wensleydale, Stilton, double Gloucester and your single Gloucester and then Cheddar. They’re Britain’s oldest cheeses.”

Sean says he made friends with various chefs thanks to his Corrie fame, leading him to discover his enthusiasm for dairy.

Coronation Street confirmed the news that Sean will no longer appear as Martin in the soap for Gail’s departure. In a statement, a spokesperson told The Mirror: “Sean Wilson has stepped down from filming for personal reasons.”

It’s also been claimed that Helen Worth – who has played Gail since 1974 – is gutted that Sean won’t be part of her exit storyline, with a source telling The Sun : “It has come as a complete and utter shock to everyone – and his sudden exit has rocked everyone involved with Corrie.

“Sean was loving his time on the show, and he was very popular on set. He had filmed scenes with loads of the cast, but then suddenly he was summoned to head office, and later it filtered out he wouldn’t be returning or his scenes airing, but no explanation offered.”

The insider added: “Clearly it’s a major blow for bosses who must now find a new magical and happy ending for Helen – but they are confident they’ll pull it out of the bag, and give viewers something wonderful.”
